The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) would like that by 2015 all cars sold in the United States are equipped with a black box, somewhat like those fitted to the airplanes. This, would record seconds previous the accident.
The project is still under study, and all the specifics of the device are not yet set. However, NHTSA advances the idea to able to record the vehicle speed, acceleration, the deceleration, if the belts were fastened, the state of the brake and accelerator pedals before impact.
This system would be based on the data recorder that is already in place in our cars accompanying the airbags. This device saves a few seconds of data before the crash, so one should be optimized so that it can record more parameters and over a longer lapse of time.
But all these have a cost, and it is not negligible. Indeed, it would cost between $ 4,000 and $ 5,000 if it equips it with materials resistant to fire and submersion. However, NHTSA notes that less than 1 percent of the more than five million car crashes in the United States each year result in a vehicle fire.
